I was showing a house for clients on the intercoastaal waterway. The man I was showing it to was head of the FOP, Fraternal Order of Police . He said that all policemen in Florida were supposed to be paid an additional $25 per month. This money had accumulated for years but Jacksonville policemen had not received their money. So I told him I would get his money.
I hired a truck with speakers installed and hired a young man named Steve. He drove around town announcing that there was going to be a demonstration at the old police headquarters. The day of the demonstration came. Nobody showed up but me and Steve. Hans Tanzler was mayor at the time. After a few hour Hans Tanzler's staff member came and tried to intimidate me. He wanted to know how long I was going to do this. I said as long as it takes. Later Mayor Tanzler showed up and had a few words to say to me. He went to Jim McMillan and said I did not have a permit and he wanted me arrested. Jim McMillan answered, "Mr. Mayor you should look out the window." All the policemen who got off duty had stayed to watch over me. McMillan added, "You don't have a jail in Duval County that can hold her." The mayor went back, held a press conference and gave them their money.
Years later two officers came to visit me on Fort George Island. They were moving to their new police administration building.
They gave me a photo with pin holes in the corners. They told me that I had been their "Pin Up Girl" all those years and they wanted me to have the photo.
